Homebound Captures the Untold Struggles of Millions During the Pandemic

Six years ago, when COVID-19 hits country with a major crisis,  schools, colleges, and factories were closed , roads were deserted, and Section 144 was imposed,  transportation was halted, millions of migrant workers lost their jobs and were forced to walk back to their hometowns. Many died from hunger and dehydration rather than the virus itself.

On May 20, 2020, a  photograph went viral in The New York Times taken by Kashmiri journalist Basharat Peer . It showed a young man holding his ill friend in his lap, hoping someone would come to help. Five years later, filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan made a movie based on this real incident.

Home Bound, a social realism drama centres on two best friends Chandan Kumar (Vishal Jethwa) and Mohammad Shoaib ( Ishaan Khatter), belonging to different communities.  Despite the social difference their friendship is stronger than the social barrier fixed  by the society.  Deeply determined to become police officers to  subdue their poverty and believed that wearing the uniform will earn them dignity, equality, and freedom from caste-based humiliation.

The story highlights the challenges of securing a full-time public sector job through a competitive government-conducted by central government agency. For people in rural areas becoming a public servant is not just employment but a cherished childhood dream.

Among millions of aspirants competing for one exam , Chandan and Shoaib become one of the aspirants who navigates the pressures of their shared dream and the struggles  which puts them down uncontrollably out of their power. Want a Promotion?  Get a degree first. Need money for father’s surgery ? Get a job first . Want to fit in socially ? Sorry that’s not possible, “Stay out of my league”.    In the midst of hardship, it’s their  quiet resilience of their friendship that carries the soul of the story.

Neeraj Ghaywan once again excelled his poignant storytelling after Masan. He consciously portrays the harsh realities of social discrimination and the struggles faced by scheduled caste communities.

In the final attempt, Chandan clears the exam, qualified for the position but the physical test is one last step for him to wear a permanent police uniform. But Shoaib misses the chance  and loses his age eligibility to reappear for the exam, leaving no option but to work for any private firm. His fate doesn’t leave with his disappointment with exam failure further added to another conflict that his father needs immediate leg surgery before stepping into farm again , which cost around Rs 2 lakh .

Sudha Bharti ( Jhanvi Kapoor ) has a brief but significant role in the film. Her character stresses the importance of education , she reminds Chandan that securing graduation will help him to get higher promotion unlike her father who stays in the same position for years due to lack of a degree.

Vishal Jethwa delivers a deeply moving performance as Chandan, capturing the character’s hope, pain, and the humiliation he endures because of his caste. Even though he belongs to a Dalit community, he struggles to access the benefits meant for Scheduled Castes and must repeatedly defend his dignity before authorities, reflecting the deep-rooted discrimination he faces. His powerful performance in the climax leaves the audience emotional and highlights the sacrifices and resilience that define his character.

Ishann Khatter performed no less than Vishal. Both of them look like real brothers in that movie, the pain behind separation from his friend is also visibly seen. During the pandemic sequences, his desperate attempt to save his dehydrated friend further highlights the emotional depth of his acting.

Homebound stays closer to heart to many people. The pandemic changed the world, but this movie portrays the problems we have been ignoring all the time. This film managed to tell a deeply personal story while weaving in those bigger realities, making it feel urgent and timeless at once.
