Homebound Captures the Untold Struggles of Millions During the Pandemic

Image
Six years ago, when COVID-19 hits country with a major crisis,  schools, colleges, and factories were closed , roads were deserted, and Section 144 was imposed,  transportation was halted, millions of migrant workers lost their jobs and were forced to walk back to their hometowns. Many died from hunger and dehydration rather than the virus itself. On May 20, 2020, a  photograph went viral in The New York Times taken by Kashmiri journalist Basharat Peer . It showed a young man holding his ill friend in his lap, hoping someone would come to help. Five years later, filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan made a movie based on this real incident. Home Bound, a social realism drama centres on two best friends Chandan Kumar (Vishal Jethwa) and Mohammad Shoaib ( Ishaan Khatter), belonging to different communities.  Despite the social difference their friendship is stronger than the social barrier fixed  by the society.  Deeply determined to become police officers to ...

A Museum That Filled My Eyes with Tears of Joy

Image
Hi, this is another blog about my personal experience. I recently visited the Museum of Possibilities, located opposite Marina Beach in Chennai, the second-largest beach in the world. I decided to go there based on a friend’s recommendation, and what followed became an unforgettable experience that I share in this blog.  The Museum of Possibilities (MoP) is a unique space where people with disabilities can explore and demonstrate their potential, proving they can achieve everything despite their challenges. Initiated by the Tamil Nadu government and currently  managed by the Chennai-based NGO Vidya Sagar, the MoP focuses on empowering individuals with disabilities. It provides technology training, support for employment, and opportunities for skill-building, promoting social inclusion and creating a meaningful path for community engagement. One of the major highlights of this museum was the collection of drawings painted by disabled people. When a customer purchases a painting ...

Expensive Batteries Ground Government’s Drone Didi Scheme

Image
Hello guys, as you have read my other blogs this one would be different and close to my heart from others because, I interviewed some real people on the scheme of drone didi, which captivates me to explore more about the scheme.  I was eager to learn about the people and meet them in real life for the first time. In this blog, I share what I learned about the scheme In the quiet village of Onambakkam in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu district,  D. Muniyammal (36), a farmer, had high hopes of using drones to spray fertiliser,  reduce labour costs, and double her monthly income from her 4-acre land.  Muniyammal’s hopes stood ground when she learned about the Namo Drone Didi  scheme while purchasing pesticides from Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore  Limited (FACT), a fertiliser supplier company. She had an opportunity to use drones to  make fertiliser dispersion more efficient and increase crop production in her rice farm.  The Drone Didi initia...

Parasakthi movie review

Sudha Kongara known for her power pact story telling and famous for biography movie Soorarai Potru , came back with another powerful yet real incident which made people think beyond realisation of their linguistic rights. The story was adapted from a real life incident  which happened in  1960’s  at Annamalai university in  Chidambaram where students led mass protest against anti hindi protest protecting their linguistic rights and creating equal job opportunities among youth in central government.  It dramatizes the student-led agitation against making Hindi the sole official language, featuring the 1965 riots, police firing at Annamalai University, and the sacrifice of student leader Rajendran.  The film begins with a group of students setting fire on a train which leads to the start of mass protest against Hindi imposition all over the county. Jayam Ravi a well educated Tamil guy who blindly supports central government agenda vows to take revenge ...

Evaluating Modi's Economic Vision: Has India Achieved Growth or Missed Opportunities?

Image
It’s nearly been a decade since Narendra Modi assumed office in the Indian administration and sought a third term in the 2024 general election. The party came to power in 2014 with a majority of votes in the election polls. In 2016, India became the fastest-growing economy, leaving behind China. Until 2016, India's GDP rate growth has been steady, achieving more than 7% for every quarter. Since mid-2016, economic growth started to decline, and in 2019, India’s economic growth fell to 4.5 percent. After the government introduced certain policies such as demonetization of 500 and 1000 and goods and services tax, COVID lockdown, which severely impacted its economic growth,. There is a continuous debate about economic growth under the Modi administration. Even senior party figures like economist and former minister Arun Shourie have criticized the government, labeling falsehood as a defining trait. This raises significant doubts about the economic performance under Modi's administr...

Unveiling the Dynamics of Electoral Bonds in India

Image
The issue of electoral bonds gained attention following the Supreme Court's decision to invalidate the government's scheme. The court ruled that the anonymity provision violated the Right to Information under act Article 19(A) of the Constitution.   On February 15, 2024, the Supreme Court, comprised of a seven-member bench led by the Chief Justice, delivered a unanimous verdict declaring electoral bonds unconstitutional. The ruling called for an immediate cessation of the electoral bond system, citing violations of the Right to Information Act under Article 19(A) of the Constitution. The court highlighted concerns regarding transparency, noting that electoral bonds obscure the identities of corporate donors to political parties, thereby impeding voters' access to vital information on political funding. This lack of transparency, the court argued, undermines the electorate's ability to make informed voting decisions. The verdict underscores broader apprehensions surrou...
