Parasakthi movie review
Sudha Kongara known for her power pact story telling and famous for biography movie Soorarai Potru , came back with another powerful yet real incident which made people think beyond realisation of their linguistic rights. The story was adapted from a real life incident which happened in 1960’s at Annamalai university in Chidambaram where students led mass protest against anti hindi protest protecting their linguistic rights and creating equal job opportunities among youth in central government.
It dramatizes the student-led agitation against making Hindi the sole official language, featuring the 1965 riots, police firing at Annamalai University, and the sacrifice of student leader Rajendran.
The film begins with a group of students setting fire on a train which leads to the start of mass protest against Hindi imposition all over the county. Jayam Ravi a well educated Tamil guy who blindly supports central government agenda vows to take revenge on Jayam Ravi and students who organise mass protest against Hindi imposition.
The movie has many misconception facts which hides the truth in many incidents.
Let me tell you the real history behind mass anti hindi imposition protests. After Independence and emergence of the Indian Constitution in 1950 , the Union government unanimously passed that English will be the official language until January 26,1965 after which Hindi became the sole official language of India.
Back in 1964 Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made a promise that English would continue as an official language under three language processes. But the promise got broken after the demise of Jawaharlal Nehru. On March 7,1964 TN Chief Minister M. Bhaktavatsalam of the Congress party introduced the Three-Language Formula (English-Hindi-Tamil) in the Madras Legislative Assembly, which resulted in fear of imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil students feared that Hindi imposition in non hindi states will result in losing central government and civil service jobs among youths.
The Peak violence on 1964- 1965
On 25th January students from Annamalai University and University of Madras went for one day strike. Both university and school students mobilized for mass protest against the Hindi Imposition, Public transport was being vandalised , police officers were attacked , there were banners, slogan shouting , drums and bugles. Students marched towards the centre of Chidambaram . The protest was peaceful until police asked the protest to stop and dismiss the protest when students refused. Police opened fire on the unarmed students, in the shooting the student leader Rajendran was shot dead and another protest leader Nedumaran was wounded seriously.
In the movie there are certain sequences which were factually wrong but we can take it as a commercial film not a historical agenda , where the commercial has some fiction and spicy masala.
Apart from misinformation and factual incorrect of the incident one thing was true people from non hindi speaking states were required to learn hindi in order to get job in central government department. In the movie it portrays all over India coming to support Tamil Nadu for imposition against Hindi .
Sreelalala gave her best performance in her first tamil movie, and Jayam Ravi in the antagonist role was one of my favorites, and how did I forget to mention about the protagonist Sivakarthikeyan he gave his fantabulous performance just like he gave for Amaran. But the chemistry between Sivakarthikeyan and Sreelalla did not go well ,
Overall the movie was one time watchable with your family.
